Listening to Your Inner Voice – A Path to Happiness

What is it inside of us that guides us on our path to do something out of our normal realms? Are you conscious of that voice that quietly whispers in your ear? Do you look outside of yourself for your happiness? We sometimes think that buying a new house or a new car will make us happy. It seems so in the short term, but soon that empty feeling returns. What is missing?

My Experience
It was in 1990 when I discovered Well Being Magazine. Every issue was devoured with interest and an inner searching for something, but I really didn’t know what that something looked like! The only page that persistently piqued my interest was the whole page advertisement for Reiki (healing technique). At that time, I didn’t even know what Reiki was, but I assured myself I would do it one day!

That day came early in 1992. Determination was the key and with three young children, it took some organization. The seminar was held four hours away from my home, in a major city. My destination was “The Usui Reiki Centre”. What a life changing experience learning Reiki 1 and 2 was for me! The Reiki Master was brilliant and was an inspiration to all the participants.

Reiki 2 includes learning how to do a distant healing. During my initial “Distant Healing” on myself, an amazing thing happened that I will never forget. An indescribable feeling rose through my body and I became overwhelmed with tears. An inner voice said very clearly, “You are not inferior, You are worthy!” OMG! It was awesome!

The next challenge was performing a distant healing on another person. We each took a photo of someone we loved who needed healing. The photos were pooled and we each selected a photo of someone we knew absolutely nothing about! We practiced our newly learned skill and the result for me was a two-page reading on the lady in the photo. Where did that information come from?

What was really confronting for me was each person had to read their results into a microphone for all to hear. There were about 150 people there. You could have heard a pin drop as each person spoke about “their photo”. It was fascinating! Most people were accurate, including me. How did I do that?

The Higher Self
Everyone has a higher self who guides and suggests in a quest to keep us on our path. We have all come in with a mission, but our conscious self forgets. The role of the subconscious or higher self is to keep us pointing in the right direction. Meditation is a great way of listening to our inner voice. All our lives are getting busier and it is hard to find the time just to be.

It can be said “inaction is more satisfying than action”. A few minutes each day spent deep breathing and relaxing can give you the energy to get you through the day. In the meditative state you are much more likely to receive that inner guidance you are seeking. Be conscious of your breathing. Are you a shallow breather or do you breathe with your abdomen? Shallow breathers tend to be more stressed!

Make it your mission to be in touch with your higher self, your subconscious mind or whatever you call that part of yourself that knows everything. If you have a problem, state that problem before you go to bed at night and ask your subconscious mind, which never sleeps, to solve it for you. Hopefully, when you wake in the morning the answer will come to you! You will never feel alone again and you will find a sense of being connected to a higher source, liberating and fulfilling, with a sense of happiness you haven’t found before.

I look forward to inspiring you to be who you are meant to be. In my next article I will share with you the first time I can remember hearing a voice that was definitely not my own. I had a choice to listen or not to listen. My choice saved my life, my husband’s life and the life of my little four-year-old cousin.
