In India, you can’t think about a curry without turmeric in it. However, it’s only now that people are realizing that turmeric has some amazing powers and is more than a spice which can be relegated to a shelf on your kitchen. Turmeric is packed with loads of benefits and today, scientists are also substantiating this fact with research to prove it.
Turmeric is a wonder product that has gained fame in recent times although in India, people have been using it right from ancient times. At present, turmeric is one spice which will always be found in every Indian kitchen and is used to add flavor to curries and stir fries. But its skin benefits are more notable as turmeric is renowned for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Beauticians the world over are waking up to the amazing benefits of turmeric and it’s also being incorporated in beauty products. What’s wonderful about turmeric is that it’s easily available and you can use it in different ways using ingredients that are available right in your own house.
If you are able to procure pure turmeric powder, you can use it in many ways to add glow to your skin.
- Turmeric helps you reduce pigmentation on your face and even out your skin tone. It can be easily done at home. Mix a little turmeric with cucumber or lemon juice and apply to your face. Leave it for some time and wash off. A one-time application will be of little help and only regular use will give a soft glow to your face.
- Troubled with acne? Whether it’s for you or your teenager, turmeric is a beauty ingredient that is harmless and yet offers great results. Turmeric mixed with sandalwood powder and a little water, and applied to the face can greatly reduce the appearance of acne. It’s definitely a cheaper alternative to all those creams and gels that are often not as effective as desired or they claim.
- Here’s a great idea for an all over body scrub. Mix some turmeric with gram flour and water and use it to scrub all over your body before your shower. Doing this regularly will indeed help you get a glowing skin. Ask any bride in India and she will affirm that this is the beauty regimen that they dutifully follow weeks before their wedding to get a spotless skin.
- One problem that often besets pregnant women is the appearance of stretch marks on their abdomen. If you’ve wondered how stretch marks can be avoided, try applying a mixture of turmeric with yogurt to the abdomen and then it wipe off after five minutes. If you continue this regularly, it will help in maintaining the elasticity of the skin and prevent stretch marks.
- Turmeric has also been dubbed the wonder product because of its ability to fight free radicals. This excellent anti-oxidant is known to help prevent various diseases as well as cancer. In fact, turmeric is one of the best known remedies used to reduce the recovery time of various skin afflictions that are caused by chicken pox etc. Turmeric helps in reducing skin rashes as well.
- For those who want to reduce the hair growth on their face, turmeric again comes to the rescue. Regular washing with turmeric reduces facial hair growth significantly.
- Grandmothers in India often prefer to apply a paste of turmeric to minor cuts, bruises and bumps as it reduces the swelling just as an ice pack would do, without the discomfort. Its various antiseptic properties are perfect for using it for minor cuts, wounds and abrasions and it helps in quickening the healing process.
- If you’ve accidentally burnt your hand in the kitchen, here’s a quick remedy to ease the burn. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric with some aloe gel and apply to the burn.
- So far, we’ve read about the cosmetic effects of turmeric for the skin. But did you know that turmeric is a fantastic natural way to beat that cough that has been troubling you for so many days? Dump those expectorants and simply mix a spoonful of turmeric in hot milk and drink it down. The hot milk eases the throat and the turmeric fights infection in the throat.
- Turmeric helps reducing gum infections also! Apply a mixture of turmeric, rock salt and mustard oil to the affected area around two to three times a day. Follow this by washing your mouth with a little warm water.
- Feeling listless and tired? If you suspect you have anemia, then a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with honey, taken daily can help in countering anemia.
- Turmeric powder mixed with water is also known to help diarrhea.
Before you get started with any cosmetic or skin related treatments with turmeric, do make a note that it can stain the skin a light yellow. It’s a good idea to use it at night and then wash off with water and a gentle cleanser in the morning.
As you’ve probably figured out by now, turmeric is not only great for applying on the skin but has a host of wonderful benefits if you ingest it as well. It’s a sharp and pungent spice and no Indian food is complete without it. Try adding it to your meals while cooking and while it might give off a yellow tinge, remember all the wonderful benefits you will have. Of course, the amount of turmeric used in food is rather minimal but it’s a good food habit.
Different scientific findings about turmeric also show that it can actually prevent leukemia by protecting DNA from harmful pollutants. Turmeric is also known to minimize the ill effects of processed foods as well as smoking. One of the active compounds of turmeric, Curcumin, is held responsible for much of this benefit.

Wow! That was a brilliant article. As Michele states, all hail to the mighty ‘Haldi’, as turmeric is called in India. Thanks for bringing these insights to us. Can’t wait for more of these ‘natural’ remedies.
Keep up the good work!

thanks, brilliant, appreciated.
Also look into if you want adding black pepper to improve the effect of the turmeric (google to confirm)
I have also understood that turmeric and honey is good for dark circles when placed under the eyes. Since dark circles might be a vitamin k deficiency try mixing with juiced kale or spinach instead of honey! If you don’t use honey (as I don’t), a Google search just confirmed that pineapple juice might be good too. I once gave myself a turmeric facial, fully expecting to have golden skin for a week. 🙂 Surprisingly it rinses right off.
For sprains, one can heat a mixture of turmeric with lime and apply the paste while its warm on the affected area at a regular interval.
have you got any improvement in vision?
I was recommended Tumeric for dry eyes. I took Turmeric in capsule form, 1 in the morning, and I needed no more eye drops.
I need to hear exactly what Young has to say with that?
This is the GREATEST topic I read today
Wow. Did not know. Been taking it as a supplement to calm my inflammation from my gluten allergy.
Turmeric is mentioned here and many other places as a great and wonderful aid to good health but only one poster mentions black pepper that increases turmeric’s efficacy by 2000%.
But no one mentions quantities. Are we to use a mg. a gram, an ounce and how much pepper do we mix with it?
excellent posting, i obviously like this web site, keep on it.
Could I just say what a help to discover somebody who essentially understands just what they are discussing on the web. You definitely have learned to bring a problem to light and allow it to significant. Even more people should learn it all and understand this particular side of the story. I can’t believe you’re not very popular because you essentially have the gift.
I’m still learning from you, while I’m trying to reach my goals. I definitely liked reading all that is written on your website.
Keep the tips coming. I loved it
Thanks for the post, great information! I use Turmeric for cramps by adding a teaspoon of powder in a bit of raw coconut water, works like a charm 🙂 If you work out a lot, it’s also great to shoot with some coconut water right after the gym as it speeds up the healing process so you wake up less sore the next day. <3 Love
I have also read that turmeric can help with wheezing if you have copd or asthma. I have been taking this herb for over a year now. I have copd, and I dont wheeze any longer. My brother in law does heating and air for some Hindus and they told him about the health benefits of tumeric. They swear that they have a very low rate of Alzheimer’s. It can also prevent breast tumours. I always try to share this information to women who have had breast cancer and to those who want to prevent it. So, people should try it!
hi i have been taking turmeric cap to treat my psoriasis over the past year ,i now can say it har gone
compleatly ,try it for a bout 3 months, alex
I read something online about Turmeric and Cumin good for psoriasis….. does it really make it go away?? thank you!!
I had a boil and used a rag soaked in hot water mixed with turmeric. The boil came to head that day and burst. Yay!
I also use turmeric to prevent boils. I had been getting many on my face, neck and back. I made a paste of turmeric powder and water and applied directly on the boils. I found they cleared up much faster.
Now mix 4 heaped teaspoons of turmeric powder in a full 1.5 litre V8 Vegetable juice bottle (just drink a little juice from the bottle first to mix easier) and shake the bottle to mix it in. I drink 250mL of this a day and have had no boils for the past 2 months. The taste takes some getting used to, but 10 seconds of not-great flavour each day is better than 2 weeks of pain and embarrassment per boil.
P.S. It’s much cheaper to buy Turmeric by the bag in asian supermarkets, instead of tiny jars at a normal shop.
Turmeric Turmeric Tumeric
Where do I start: This stuff is good, I can see why Indians have used it for many years to control blemishes. The thing about this product is that one must be honest with themselves when using it to prevent acne, boils, etc. We all know that acne is caused by our genetics and bad habits. As in, our genetics can make us more prone to breakouts than others and our bad habits can make this much worse. Do not expect turmeric to eliminate every single blemish you have, especially you are really prone to outbreaks. To truly gain the maximum benefits of this ingredient, you must eliminate/limit all vices – that includes drinking and smoking. There’s no question that a lot of skin problems are related to this. People with acne tend to have livers that dont filter toxins out as well as others. Believe me, I know – I’m one of these people. When I used to drink excessively, I would get major breakouts of cysts, etc. Terrible cysts that I dont care to remember. Also I’ve noticed a direct correlation between when I smoke and acne. Many studies show that there’s no link, but in actuality smoking constricts the blood vessels and inhibits/slows down the healing process. Thus if your body is working on healing an infection, it is likely to not heal it as quick or for the infection to get worse before healing if you’re smoking. So try your best to watch out for these two vices. Also sugary processed foods can trigger acne as well, but I’m sure you’re wondering – where’s the fun in all of this? At some point, you’ll have to use trial and error to pick the appropriate level of moderation between drinking, smoking, and eating bad food. Another thing about turmeric is the stain, it stains everything – your skin, pillows, etc. I would recommend mixing greek yogurt with turmeric which will lessen the stain it leaves on your skin, especially your face. I also advice cutting your nails short so that the yellow doesnt stain your nail tips. And you may also want to dedicate a few t shirts to your turmeric mask days. My routine below is as follows: I mix a cup of greek yogurt (fruit added) with about a teaspoon of turmeric. I apply this to my face after washing it with warm water. I let the mask sit on for 15 minutes and rinse it off thoroughly with warm water and then close my pores with cool (not freezing cold) water. You may also want to change your pillow cases regularly and avoid sleeping on your side because whatever dirt/dead skin that is on your pillow surface can clog your pores as well. Use the turmeric mask for at least 2 weeks and cut your vices down to zero. You will be happy with the results. Some also have recommend a turmeric ginger tea which you can make at home. Simply boil about a teaspoon of turmeric in about 2-3 cups of water with a teaspoon of ginger (may be less) and sip it at least every other day. That should help clear up infections internally as well since turmeic is known for helping your liver filter out toxins.
Its great to know that you can use TURMERIC is so many ways.

I believe it was turmeric that saved me from developing lung caner. In December 2011 I needed chest Xrays for a bad case of bronchitis. They found a tumor in my right lung. I was a heavy smoker for 13 years. I refused to be cut open for biopsy, so whether it was malignant or not is unknown. However, I began taking high doses of turmeric every day for ten weeks. I went in for a second Xray and the tumor had vanished. A panel of four doctors were forced to write under “Reason for Discrepancy: Unable to explain.” I never mentioned the turmeric out of fear of being ridiculed. Whatever anyone may think, I believe it was the turmeric.
What were the high doses you took and in what form (foods, drinks, etc.)?
I am so pleased that the turmeric worked for you, and I am sure that it was that. Please would you tell me what dose you took, and it what form. Thank you so much and god bless
To: L Jarvis
Please tell me what high doses of turmeric you undertake?? what form is it powder.? Please reply I need your help.
Dear L Jarvis,
There is a very good chance that it was the Turmeric – there is plenty of research about this – I have personally seen a few cancer patients (family) that took a Turmeric/Curcumin Extract called Curcumall and it trully changed their life – there is plenty of research about this – see http://www.curcum-all.com/turmeric-cancer.html.
By the way, I also have an uncle that has Psoriasis and he applies this liquid Turmeric extract and it has helped him a lot.
My husband and i got happy Michael managed to do his studies from your ideas he gained using your blog. It’s not at all simplistic just to continually be handing out solutions which others could have been trying to sell. We do know we’ve got the website owner to thank because of that. The type of explanations you made, the straightforward blog menu, the relationships you will make it easier to promote – it is many astonishing, and it’s really letting our son in addition to our family feel that that idea is brilliant, and that’s incredibly pressing. Thanks for the whole lot!
Curcumin in its bioavailable form can modulate nrf2 for internal antioxidant production.
Curcumin has also shown promise in Alheimer’s Disease.
There is a new blog on curcumin with some excellent information on it. http://www.curcumincurcumin.com/?p=11
Dear Bruce,
Thanks for sharing your blog. FYI it still has some code and the text is not clear.
Will putting some of this turmeric paste onto a small sized cyst that i have on the top of my head?
Turmeric has provided me with Heath benifits that have been imeasurable. From being free from MRSA, to detox of liver to keeping your immune system from getting all the bugs others have gotten. This is a herb that God has put on our planet to be enjoyed and use. I am so grateful for this herb. I buy my turmeric root (organic) power from starwest botanicals and load my own OO gelatin caps. I can look back a year ago at how unhealthy I was and most deffinetly see and tell the difference. Thanks for this site, very informative.
I have gotten the benefits from tumeric. I had pain in my knees and my body was always tired. I decided to try the tumeric so I only took 300mg once a day. The first week I did not see any results but then the second week came and my body is more energetic and I have less knee pain. I stopped taking it recently but I will start again because this herb did alot for me. Before I tried the tumeric I tried so many herbs but they did not help me.
i used turmeric mixed with lemon on my skin and now it is yellow help!
